The wide adoption of cloud services changed the architecture of large data centers, driven by new virtualization technologies, low cost white-boxes, and the development of automated operations. In contrast, service providers’ network architecture has remained almost the same for the last 30 years, with expensive propriety hardware, multi-layer architecture and dedicated systems per network service. While NFV attempted to bring some of the data center virtualization efficiencies to networking, it has been limited to just a few services and low throughput access solutions.

The emergence of networking merchant silicon technologies opened the door for service providers to embrace web-scale networking by adopting the architectural concepts of large clouds. CSPs can now build high-scale converged infrastructures that support any service on any port, with cloud-native software and microservices. Such disaggregated approach can scale higher than any traditional approach, at a much lower TCO.

Sterling has more than 15 years' experience in telecommunications as an industry analyst and journalist. His coverage area at Heavy Reading is optical networking, including packet-optical transport. He also authors Heavy Reading's Packet-Enabled Optical Networking Market Tracker and Next-Gen Core Packet-Optical Market Tracker. Sterling joined Heavy Reading after five years at IDC, where he served as lead optical networks analyst, responsible for the firm's optical networking subscription research and custom consulting activities. Prior to IDC, Sterling worked for Standard & Poor's, where he delivered global industry analysis on a range of IT segments. He is a former journalist and editor at Telecommunications Magazine, and has also done consulting work for the research firm Current Analysis. Sterling is a frequent speaker at telecom industry events and a highly sought-after source among the business and trade press.

Ofer Weill, Director of Product Marketing, DriveNets
Ofer Weill is the Director of Product Marketing at DriveNets. He brings over 20 years of telecommunications and network experience in hardware and software architecture, high-end services, and product management.

Before joining DriveNets, Ofer served as a VP of Product Management and Technology at Vasona Networks which developed Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) platforms and provided real-time insight and control of mobile data.

Prior to Vasona Networks, Ofer joined Cisco, through the acquisition of P-Cube, a leader in the evolution of the DPI market. Ofer spent 7 years as a Senior System Architect at Cisco, leading the design of integrated service-cards in high-end routers.

Yuval Moshe, the VP of Product, has over 13 years in the network communications industry. Starting as a Network Engineer in the Israeli Air Force, Yuval brings expertise in routing, network design, and providing IP/MPLS network solutions for service providers. Prior to joining DriveNets, Yuval was part of an innovative SDN platform at Compass Networks and managed Pre & Post-Sale engineering at ECI Telecom.
