The drive to 5G for CSPs is about deploying a network that provides unprecedented levels of data speed, ultra-low latency networks and the ability to deliver a connected world where billions of things will require connectivity to a highly reliable network. While the first specification for 5G was recently ratified by 3GPP, Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) is ideally positioned to be a bridge for CSPs wanting to leverage their existing infrastructure to deploy low-latency, high-bandwidth services closer to the edge and the eventual roll out of 5G networks. With a MEC architecture, CSPs are uniquely positioned to drive the adoption of next-gen applications at the network edge, including CDN, DNS and service caching, 5G and IoT telemetry, mobile traffic shaping, location services, video analytics, augmented reality and connected cars. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a key technology that enables CSPs to optimize their network architecture for MEC. NFV architectures will enable CSPs to monetize new market verticals by offering more differentiated and valuable services while gaining the advantages of speed and agility in delivering these services faster to market.
